It sounds like a tourist-board line. It is a ninety-minute drive, and people who live here do it for the story once and then for the skiing after that.
The part nobody believes
There is a ski season in Cyprus.
Mount Olympus rises to 1,951 metres in the middle of the island, and the Cyprus Ski Club runs four liftsat the Troodos ski centre — including a chairlift on the FIS-homologated Zeus slope. The season runs, in the club’s own words, “usually from the beginning of January until the end of March”.
It is 2 km from the Troodos resort and about an hour and a half from the Limassol seafront. That is the whole trick: the mountain and the sea are close enough that February can contain both.

What we do not print
A run count, or a snow depth.
Our own guide data used to say “4 lifts, 12 runs” and a season of mid-January to mid-March. The lift count is right. The run count is not something the club states, and the season was a month short at both ends.
Snow on a Mediterranean mountain varies enormously year to year, so any depth we published would be decoration. Check the club before you drive up — that is what their site is for.
In and on the water
Six months of swimming, and one of the best wreck dives in the world.
The Zenobia
LarnacaA 172-metre roll-on/roll-off ferry that capsized on her maiden voyage in 1980 and settled on her side in 42 metres of water, a mile off the harbour. Lorries still strapped to her decks. Routinely named among the best wreck dives in the world, and it is a fifteen-minute boat ride from a city you could live in.
Kite-surfing at Lady's Mile
LimassolThe island's main kite spot, and usefully a WINTER sport here — the wind is best in the months the beaches are empty. Flat shallow water for a long way out.
Sea caves at Cape Greco
FamagustaKayak or paddleboard into the caves under the cliffs on a calm morning. The water is clear enough to see the bottom from the board.
Blue Flag swimming, most of the year
EverywhereThe sea holds 22°C or more for roughly six months. Locals swim well outside that; nobody will look at you strangely in April.
On land, and the season is inverted
Winter is the outdoor season here.
This is the adjustment that catches people. Hiking, cycling and running are October-to-May pursuits; July and August belong to the sea and the shade. Plan the year the other way round from the one you are used to.
The Akamas trails
Polis & AkamasThe Aphrodite trail is a 7 km loop; Avakas Gorge is a walk up a river bed between walls that close over your head. Summer is too hot — this is a winter pastime.
Cycling the Diarizos valley
PaphosQuiet road climbs through wine villages with almost no traffic. The Cyprus winter is a European cyclist's training season, which is why you will meet teams here in January.

Running, and when to do it
EverywhereThe seafront paths in Limassol and Larnaca are flat, lit and busy at six in the morning and again after eight at night. In July those are the only two sensible windows.

Where you live decides which of these you actually do.
Larnaca puts you fifteen minutes from the Zenobia. Limassol puts you an hour and a half from the snow. Polis puts the Akamas on your doorstep and everything else two hours away.
